Address of the President of the Golden Apricot Film Festival, film director Atom Egoyan

I first became aware of Armenia's rich film tradition in 1987. I was twenty-seven years old, and I was visiting Paris to present my second feature, FAMILY VIEWING, at an Armenian film festival, which was organized that year. Although I had seen Paradjanov's work in Toronto, this was my first opportunity to see the full spectrum of production. It was also a chance to meet such legends as Henrik Malian, Albert Megerdichian and Tigran Mansourian, who were also visiting Paris. This festival was one of the most important events of my cultural formation, and convinced me that I had to connect with Armenia in a more direct way. I first visited the country in 1991, coming back the next year to shoot CALENDAR with my wife, Arsinée Khanjian, and Ashot Adamian. Since that time, we have made regular trips back to Armenia, and it has become an essential part of our lives. Festivals are an amazing opportunity for filmmakers to share their stories with an audience and with each other. Remembering my experience in Paris almost twenty years ago, I trust that The Golden Apricot Festival in Yerevan will provide young artists with the same sense of nourishment and support. I am truly honoured to be the President of this unique event, and I welcome everyone to this exciting new festival. Long live The Golden Apricot!

On a rural estate live three brothers, a sister, and their blind, religious mother. Three of the siblings have epilepsy, the fourth and eldest, Augusto does not, and he's about to break away from the family: he's in love with Lucia and planning to move to the city. Augusto's sister Guilia tries to frustrate the lovers, while another brother, Alessandro, hatches a far-reaching plot to free himself of his mother's demands and other family responsibilities, to give Augusto the wherewithal to leave with Lucia, and, perhaps, to pursue incestuous impulses with his sister.

This film presnts a record of the last working year of the old prison of Valparaiso, which closed in 1999. It is a homage to the prison and to the values and customs of the men, who have secretly lived within it during its 150 year history.
