Four cities, four cases of theft, four instalments of a Champions' League game and football fever everywhere… The interwoven episodes of this film kick off in Moscow, where Galatasaray Istanbul and Deportivo La Coruña meet for the Champions' League final. A young English art dealer, is mugged after a taxi ride but finds help in the shape of a pensioner named Elena. The two women make their way to the police station. Meanwhile, in Istanbul, a German student is trying to pretend he's been mugged in order to obtain a police report and so claim the insurance money. At the same time, at the famous Spanish place of pilgrimage Santiago de Compostela, a Hungarian history teacher Gabor is relieved of his digital camera. Village policeman Barreira would be only too happy to help this Catholic pilgrim – after his siesta. Meanwhile, in Berlin, a couple of street performers decide to pretend they've been mugged in order to improve their flagging finances.

On a rural estate live three brothers, a sister, and their blind, religious mother. Three of the siblings have epilepsy, the fourth and eldest, Augusto does not, and he's about to break away from the family: he's in love with Lucia and planning to move to the city. Augusto's sister Guilia tries to frustrate the lovers, while another brother, Alessandro, hatches a far-reaching plot to free himself of his mother's demands and other family responsibilities, to give Augusto the wherewithal to leave with Lucia, and, perhaps, to pursue incestuous impulses with his sister.

This film presnts a record of the last working year of the old prison of Valparaiso, which closed in 1999. It is a homage to the prison and to the values and customs of the men, who have secretly lived within it during its 150 year history. |
