Thirty minutes of images of South Africa, its nature, people and cities, without comment, edited to the hypnotic music of the Cape Town-based musician Campbell Burns. Short and long shots, slowed down and accelerated, close-ups and vistas; collectively, they give a kaleidoscopic impression of this country, more than a decade after the official end of Apartheid.


Alberto Iannuzzi&Dan Jawitz

Alberto Iannuzzi
Born 1964, Italy.
Graduated from the University of Rome, Department of Ethnomusicology with an audiovisual thesis concerning the oral tradition in modern African society. He studied film at the International Film School of the Three Worlds in Cuba and attended the course "Filming with Natural Light" by Rolf Muller.

Dan Jawitz
Born 1960, Harare, Zimbabwe.
Produces and co-produces local and international documentaries financed partially or totally in South Africa. Notable productions produced by Jawitz include documentary series African Renaissance, My Land My Life, and A Lion’s Trail, which is one of the most sold documentaries to come from South Africa. In 2000, Jawitz was given an Award of Honor for his cintribution to the Zimbabwean film industry.

On a rural estate live three brothers, a sister, and their blind, religious mother. Three of the siblings have epilepsy, the fourth and eldest, Augusto does not, and he's about to break away from the family: he's in love with Lucia and planning to move to the city. Augusto's sister Guilia tries to frustrate the lovers, while another brother, Alessandro, hatches a far-reaching plot to free himself of his mother's demands and other family responsibilities, to give Augusto the wherewithal to leave with Lucia, and, perhaps, to pursue incestuous impulses with his sister.

This film presnts a record of the last working year of the old prison of Valparaiso, which closed in 1999. It is a homage to the prison and to the values and customs of the men, who have secretly lived within it during its 150 year history.
